This guide is a basic checklist designed to help you spot the obvious red flags before you hand over your hard-earned cash. It is not a substitute for a professional diagnostic inspection, and completing it does not grant you an honorary NVQ Level 98,683 in Advanced Motorcycle Engineering, no matter how confidently you shake the swing arm. Dirt bikes are highly-strung, high-performance machines that live a genuinely brutal life — they get thrashed, cased, dropped, and occasionally ridden into a hedge by someone who “definitely meant to do that.” This checklist is a helpful sidekick for flagging the common wear points, not a full mechanical x-ray. It cannot see inside the engine, read minds, or detect sins the seller has cleaned off with a jet wash and a prayer. If something sounds odd, looks odd, or makes you go “hmm” — trust that hmm. Pay a qualified mechanic to have a proper look before you commit. It’s a lot cheaper than finding out the hard way, at speed, three field-widths from the nearest A&E.
